Zestoretic is a combination medicine comprising of hydrochlorothiazide and lisinopril which are again the generic name of its brand counterpart. Lisinopril is a synthetic peptide derivative which is a long acting angiotensin inhibitor that can convert enzymes. It is white to off white crystalline powder, soluble in water and insoluble in ethanol. Whereas hydrochlorothiazide is a white crystalline powder and is only slightly soluble in water and freely soluble in sodium hydroxide solution.
Zestoretic is used in the treatment of mild to severe high blood pressure also known as hypertension. Both Lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide work together to lower the blood pressure rates. Lisinopril belongs to a groups of drugs known as ACE inhibitors and it works to widen the blood vessels. Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to a group of drugs known as diuretics i.e. water tablets and works to assist the body to get rid of water and salts like sodium in the urine.
Dosage and Administration
Zestoretic oral tablets are available in three different dosage compositions with the combination of Lisinopril and Hydrochlorothiazide. The dosage combinations are 10/12.5 mg, 20/12.5 mg, and 20/25 mg of Lisinopril and Hydrochlorothiazide. The dosage is titrated according to the severity of the problem and the patient’s response to the treatment.
One should take Zestoretic tablets exactly as prescribed. Read the prescription label and follow the descriptions carefully. Take this drug once every morning by mouth with a glass full of water with or without food. If the drug makes you to urinate frequently, then it can be taken four hours advance to bed time so as to avoid urinating often. The dosage for a person depends upon age and response to the medication.
Important safety information
It is necessary to continue taking Zestoretic if you are keeping well though most patients with high blood pressure do not fall sick. Keep your doctor informed of the blood pressure ratings so as to prevent dangerous reactions.
One should not take potassium or salt substitutes while being on treatment with Zestoretic. Also drinking alcohol should be forbidden as alcohol can increase the effects of the drug. When doing exercises, avoid becoming dehydrated and overheated. One should not increase or decrease the dosage strength of Zestoretic unless otherwise insisted by the physician as doing so can result in unfavorable complications in health adding to dangers and serious threats to life.
Pregnant women should not use Zestoretic as this can cause fetal toxicity and even become fatal. In case you become pregnant while on this medication then consult with the healthcare provider immediately. Breast-feeding is also not recommended as the drug can be passed on to the infant through breast milk.
To ensure safety of using Zestoretic, inform the doctor of any illnesses that may be present like allergies, heart disease, glaucoma, diabetes, liver or kidney problems, penicillin intolerance and if you recently had an organ transplant.
Get emergency help if you encounter signs of allergic reactions with Zestoretic like stomach ache, breathing difficulty, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Rush to a doctor if you suffer from fever, eye pain, restlessness, drowsiness, vision changes, jaundice, little or no urination, nausea, constipation, leg cramps, excessive thirst, frequent and increased urination, headache, vomiting, and confusion.
