Xanax is the most widely prescribed benzodiazepine and the 11th most prescribed drug in the U.S. Last year reports have shown that 39,250,000 prescriptions have been written for Xanax. Interestingly, the numbers of people who are admitted to the emergency department for the treatment with adverse effects of Xanax have gone up in recent times. What is Xanax? Why is it different from the other benzodiazepines?
Ingredients of Xanax:
The Xanax manufactured by Pfizer is an anti-anxiety sleeping pill that contains the following substances
- Active ingredients:
Alprazolam which is the active ingredient in Xanax belongs to the group of benzodiazepines. Chemically it is a triazole analog of 1, 4-benzodiazepine. This substance helps the Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA) to get linked with its receptor. GABA has an inhibitory effect on the actions of the brain. It keeps the brain calm, relieves anxiety and helps you to fall asleep.
- Inactive ingredients:
Xanax also contains other inactive ingredients such as lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, and docusate sodium with sodium benzoate, colloidal anhydrous silica, cellulose, and maize starch. The ingredients are in the inactive form and are expected to stay inert without interacting. All these ingredients are protected with a coating to enhance the durability of the pill. They help to reduce the smell of medicines which most of us are not comfortable with and thereby making it more palatable. The shelf-life of Xanax is prolonged using these ingredients so; it increases the safety of the drug in storage and shipping. These ingredients enhance the appearance of Xanax pills.
- Cosmetic ingredients:
Xanax pills are oval, biconcave pills available in golden yellow and blue colors. The two different colored Xanax pills differ in the dosage of active ingredients. The golden yellow colored Xanax pill contains 0.5mg of alprazolam and the blue one has 1mg of alprazolam. The sunset yellow lake colour to the pill is given by the manufacturer using FD&C Yellow dye No.6 and the blue color by indigotin or FD&C Blue dye No.2.
Side effects of ingredients:
The ingredients of Xanax are not completely safe. Here are few of them
- Xanax puts the life at risk if you are involved in any activities that require high consciousness in operating. Alprazolam found in Xanax can make you feel sleepy even during the day time. You need to be cautious and avoid doing risky works after taking Xanax.
- The high rates of tolerance, dependence and withdrawal symptoms registered with Xanax are due to alprazolam. Xanax is quick in action but the effects fade out quickly and the user feels the need to take another dose. Moreover, the user feels that the experience is less than the one they got for the first time. So, you might try to increase the dose and become a victim of abuse.
- Ringing sounds (tinnitus) heard in the ear continuously is the most complaint of Xanax users.
- The sunset yellow color dye, when taken in large quantities for long periods, is known to cause allergies. Furthermore, such persons have predisposed risk of acquiring cancer. Relatively, indigotin has no noticeable side effects and is considered safe to be used.
Now that you know the composition and side effects of Xanax, use the prescription judiciously.
