What is cipro used to treatCipro or also called as ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic, which belongs to the drug group of antimicrobials. It is basically used for the treatment of antibiotic infections. Antibiotic Cipro is basically used for the treatment of internal infections such as bone and joint infections, intra-abdominal infections, some types of infectious diarrhea, skin infections, respiratory tract infections, typhoid type of fever and urinary tract infections. It can be taken orally or by any other ways. For certain specific infections, Cipro can also be taken along with other antibiotics. Cipro has certain side effects but they are not severe as causing cancer and I will discuss it below in this blog about some side effects of Cipro.

Antibiotics are also called as antibacterial belong to the drug type of antimicrobial drugs. They are commonly used in the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections in our body. In 1928 Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, which was the first chemical compound possessing antibiotic properties. Fleming had a culture of bacteria in which he was working in when he found little green mold in one of the plates of cultures he was working in. He discovered that the mold which was present there either terminated or prevented the growth of the bacteria in that culture plate. The word antibiotic came from Greek origin, the Greek word for anti is against, and the word for bios is life, hence stopping the growth of a life form. The term Bacteria is the plural form of the word Bacterium since they are found only in a group or culture, bacteria are always referred in plural form. They are microscopic organisms which of some might cause illness to other living beings on earth. Some of the illness includes tuberculosis, syphilis, and some forms of meningitis. An antibiotic can only treat the infection of bacterial infections; they are not effective against any virus attacks some of which are the common cold or influenza.

Antibiotics work usually in 2 ways, Bactericidal and Bacteriostatic. A bactericidal antibiotic entirely kills all the bacteria. Penicillin is a type of bactericidal which usually deals with the formation of the cell wall or cell contents of the bacterium. A bacteriostatic ceases the bacteria from multiplying further more. Antibiotics are used for treatment against microorganisms which are bacteria, parasites, and fungi. But they are not at all effective against viruses. So if you have an infection, it is very important that you check whether is it caused by a bacteria or a virus. Most upper respiratory tract infections which are the common cold and sore throats are generally caused by viruses, hence antibiotics do not work against common flu or common cold like diseases.
