Revatio is an erectile dysfunction medication that is also prescribed for patients who suffer from pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Revatio contains the active component Sildenafil which helps in the treatment of PAH and ED. The other popular brand name of sildenafil is Viagra. However, it has to be kept in mind that that the drug is intended only for adults, hence children should never be given this medication.

Dosage

The normally suggested dosage of Revatio is close to 5 mg or 30 mg taken thrice in a span of 24 hours. Revatio dosage needs to be administered with a gap of four to six hours. In the clinical trials performed using the medicine not much efficiency was achieved by increasing the dosage level.

One should definitely refrain from exceeding 20 mg of Revatio thrice in a day and it may lead to some adverse consequences.

Revatio injection is given priority for people who are unable to take up the oral form of the medication presently. If the medication is administered in a manner of intravenous bolus injection it should be three times in a given day with the dosage level of 2.5 mg or 10 mg.

The patients need not be concerned about modifying the dosage with respect their weight. The similar pharmacological effect offered by sildenafil is thought to be experienced by taking a 10 mg dose of Revatio. The effect felt also is equal to that of experienced by taking 20 mg of N-desmethyl metabolite taken orally.

Precautions

Side Effects

The side effects associated with the use of Revatio are not very serious, in most cases. They could be redness of face, neck and chest and some patients have also complained of headache, loss of memory or impaired memory, stomach problem and even back pain. In some rare cases, the side effects could be serious and they must be treated immediately. Such side effects include hypertension (low blood pressure), dizziness and shortness of breath.

Relative Contraindications

Revatio should not be taken by patients who have been advised to take nitrate based medication continuously or at regular intervals, as this could end up in hypotension. The usage of the medication needs to be curbed even if you take guanylate cyclase stimulator as it has the potential of multiplying hypotensive problems.

Revatio should not be taken if you are currently experiencing allergy by taking sildenafil or if in case you are on a medication for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension, especially drugs like riociguat also known as Adempas.

When you are taking drugs with nitrate content for heart related problems you should refrain from taking Revatio. The nitrate constituents may include nitroglycerin or isosorbide mononitrate. Traces of nitrate are also discovered in drugs used for recreation like amyl nitrate, popularly referred as poppers.

You would sense an abrupt fall in blood pressure when you take Revatio along with a drug containing nitrate content.
