Proventil is a bronchodilator having the generic name, Albuterol sulfate, which is the active component of the mediation. The medication was insisted to be named as salbutamol sulfate by the World Health Organization. Albuterol sulfate is a white to off white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and less soluble in ethanol. It is also available in the inhaler form as quick relief oral inhalation.

Medical Uses

Proventil is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in people who have reversible obstructive airway disease and is also used to impede exercised induced bronchospasm. It should be used in children who are at least four years old.

Dosage and administration

Proventil is available in the dosage strengths of 2mg, 4mg, 2mg/5ml, 90mcg/inh, 5mg/ml, 2.5mg/3ml, 200mcg, 8mg, 0.63mg/3ml, and 1.25mg/3ml. Under all circumstances, do not alter the dosage strength of the medication without consulting a doctor. The usual recommended dosage is 2 puffs for every four to six hours as and when needed.

The prescribed Proventil should be taken by mouth as it is insisted for oral administration usually three to four times every day. The medicine should not be used for sudden attacks of breathing distress and instead one can use the quick relief inhaler.

The inactive ingredients in this medication can cause allergic reaction in the body. So inform your physician if you are not suitable to this drug or its ingredients.

If you use any other inhalers or bronchodilators or MAO inhibitors, you might possibly be affected by drug interactions. It is better to inform your physician if you consume any prescription or over the counter pills before taking Proventil. Do not let this medication get in contact with your eyes as this could result in interaction and allergy in the eyes.

This medication can raise the blood pressure rates. So it is important to keep monitoring blood pressure levels on a regular basis.

If you are allergic to the active component albuterol, then do not use Proventil.
