Premarin is the brand name for estrogen drug which contains conjugated estrogen. Lack of estrogen causes hot flashes, vaginal burning, irritation and dryness. This lack of estrogen is common during menopause. Premarin is given as a replacement of estrogen. It is also used by men and women for treating certain types of cancers.
How it works?
Premarin works to reduce the symptoms of menopause like hot flashes, vaginal dryness and irritation which are caused by the body that makes less estrogen. This medication produces enough estrogen to prevent and treat the underlying conditions. These tablets contain conjugated estrogen as the active ingredient which is a naturally occurring form of female sex hormone and these estrogens treat the distressing symptoms that women after menopause go through and also tackles the problem efficiently.
Premarin is used in the treatment of a number of medical conditions like treating symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, burning, vaginal dryness and irritation. It also helps to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and also in the replacement of estrogen in women who are having ovarian failure or other conditions that can create a lack of natural estrogen in the body. Sometimes, Premarin is also used as part of treating cancer in both men and women.
The maximum dose limit of Premarin for severe symptoms is 0.3 mg per day. In case of failure of ovarian function, 0.625mg is given daily. Dose changes should be considered after review of a lot of criteria. Thus, stick to the prescription dose.
Overdose of Premarin can cause vomiting, vaginal bleeding, nausea and other symptoms. If overdose does occur, get medical help immediately. If you smoke while using this drug, it can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke or heart attack.
Premarin tablets should be taken once a day regularly. They can be taken either with or without food and are to be swallowed as a whole with a drink. Take the tablets at the same time every day so as to help you remember better. Review with your doctor at least once a year regarding your need for continued HRT.
Premarin should not be used by pregnant women, people with certain types of cancer, vaginal bleeding, liver problem, problems in blood clotting, heart problems or kidney problems.
While using Premarin, regular check-up including blood tests for calcium, pregnancy and other tests should be conducted.
Though Premarin is available without prescription, it is very dangerous to use it without any caution. Mishandling the drug or in rare cases, certain side effects of the drug can increase risk of uterine cancer.
If you are using this drug without prescription, remember to stop the drug immediately if you experience unusual vaginal bleeding.
Premarin should be taken for three weeks and it takes a week for follow up. You should take up monthly mammograms, blood tests and other procedures to check for adverse health developments.
