Ambien or Zolpidem is a treatment for insomnia and few brain disorders. It is also a sedative and can be called as a hypnotic. A sedative is a drug substance that causes sedation by decreasing excitement or irritability. While using in increased dosage it may also cause slow uncertain reflexes. Zolpidem is a nonbenzodiazepnic hypnotic from the imidazopyridine class in GABA, which is Gamma Ammino Butyric Acid. It is a neurotransmitter and usually works within 15 minutes, and its effects lasts for about two to three hours. The hypnotic effects of this drug is more similar to benzodiazepine group of drugs. But these are molecularly different from the classical old benzodiazepine molecule and is known as imidazopyridine. There are other drugs which can reverse the effects caused by zolpidem, one of such is flumazenil a benzodiazepine receptor antagonist, and is used for benzodiazepine overdose which can reverse the sedative or hypnotic effects like memory impairing, slow reflexes. The immediate release pills are used to give you sleep as soon as you go to bed. There is an extended form as ambien CR, which has 2 layers in it, the first layer makes you fall asleep so quick, and the second layer makes you to sleep slowly.
Does it cure insomnia permanently?
Ambien is mainly used for insomnia. Doctors prescribe this for usually about two to six weeks for the treatment of sleeping disorder. It works in for sleep initiation problems but it is not good in maintaining the sleep for longer time. It also depends on the psychological effects of the patient consuming the pills. In United States of America an average of 4% adults aged 20 and over take prescribed medications for sleeping, and over 2% use prescribed medications for sleeping at age of 20 – 39. People aged more than 50 – 59 are 7% using pills to get peaceful sleep.
How is Ambien taken?
The official name for generic ambien is zolpidem. It is commonly used by adults who suffer from sleeping disorders. The drug can be classified into the category of sedative or hypnotic drugs. It takes control of the brain to help create a calm effect which will help patients fall asleep quickly and to have a peaceful sleep. It is taken only for a short period of two to three weeks.
The unique quality of Ambien is that it is the one of the few pills which is most effective when consumed in on an empty stomach. It works very fast and should be taken just before resting in bed. So if you are lactose intolerant do not prefer this tablet for sleeping disorder. To check whether ambien is good for the patient, you have to check for the various diseases whether they posses them or not, liver disease, kidney disease, sleep apnea, history of mental illness, suicide or depression, history of alcohol addiction or drug addiction.

- Ambien is usually taken only at bed time and only if needed. Hence you would not miss any dose.

This may impair your speed of thinking or reflexes. You might feel sleepy in the next morning you take the pill.
