Product Description

Indocin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that works by preventing the production of prostaglandins which is the physiologically active lipid that is found in every tissue of the body. The pill was discovered in the year 1963 and was approved by FDA in 1965 for use in the US markets.

Indocin is an effective tocolytic agent (meds that are used to suppress premature labor). By inhibiting prostaglandin in the uterus it reduces the uterine contractions in pregnant women.

Medical Uses

Indocin is primarily used to treat moderate to severe pain. As the pill prevents the production of prostaglandins it reduces swelling and pain. It is also used to treat menstrual cramps, reactive arthritis, hypnic headaches (mild headaches that occur in people older than 63 years of age), rheumatoid arthritis, renal colic (pain due to kidney stones) and juvenile or childhood arthritis. In most cases the condition can be prevented from happening if the pill is taken in the way it has been directed.

Indocin is also helpful in the treatment of arthritis, gout and migraines. This pill is not supposed to be taken as a pain relief pill for minor aches or fever. In most cases it is used as an anti-inflammatory medication.

Dosing guide

Initially lower dose of Indocin is recommended to be taken 2 to 3 times a day. Depending on the severity of side effects the dosage strength may vary. Usually 25 mg of this pill is prescribed. Based on the results, the dosage may be increased to 50 mg upon consulting a physician but the maximum recommended dosage is 200 mg for a day. The generic version of this pill, indomethacin produces the same result as the brand one in terms of its efficacy. Treatment duration of this pill is also based on the medical condition for which the person is getting treated.
