Product Description

Hydrochlorothiazide is a prescription medication and is a diuretic. This water medication is also available in the brand forms and was approved by the Food and Medications Administration in the year 1959. It is available in the form of tablets with dosage strengths of 12.5 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg and in the form of capsules with dosage strength of 12.5 mg. The medication is a white crystalline powder which is slightly soluble in water and consists of a few inactive ingredients like corn starch, magnesium stearate and lactose monohydrate.

Medical Uses

Hydrochlorothiazide is basically used to treat high blood pressure. It is also used to treat fluid retention i.e. edema in people who have congestive heart failure, kidney disorders, cirrhosis of the liver or to treat edema that is caused by taking steroids or estrogen.

Hydrochlorothiazide works by hindering the salt and fluid absorption from the urine in the kidneys resulting in diuresis i.e. increased urine output. It is also used in the treatment of calcium comprising kidney stones.

Dosing guide

Hydrochlorothiazide tablets can be taken by mouth with or without food usually once each day. The dosage of the tablet differs for hypertension and edema patients. It is better to take the medications before 6pm so as to prevent urination in the night time. The physician will advise patients to take the medication at the same time each day in order to receive best results from the medication. The dosage for every individual can differ according to one’s age, medical condition and their response to the medication.

Side Effects

A few people might get severe skin allergies and Stevens – Johnson syndrome including exfoliative dermatitis. Other bodily reactions include symptoms of kidney failure and blurred vision. Do not use this tablet and get emergency help if you have irregular heartbeat, muscle pain, diarrhea, and loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach ache or constipation.

Relative contraindications

The medication can possibly interact with other medications, herbs or any vitamin supplements. So it is crucial to notify the consulting physician if you undergo any other medical treatment.

Alcohol can easily interact with this medication making you feel dizzy. Do not take narcotics with Hydrochlorothiazide as narcotic has an addictive effect and can result in severe complications in health.

If you use any muscle relaxers, seizures medications or medications for treating depression and anxiety, inform your doctor about the same so as avoid any dangerous and complicated side effects.
