Viagra for fetal growthDoctors proclaim that Viagra in addition to treating ED, also has the potency to enhance the growth of the fetus. If you are more curious to know how true this can be, then reading this blog will help you in ascertaining the benefits of Viagra and its role in boosting the fetal growth.

Understanding fetal growth restriction (FGR)

Usually pregnancies that have early onset of fetal growth restriction have poor perinatal outcome. Sildenafil that acts as a vasodilator increases the utero placental blood flow and enhances the growth of fetus. A study was thus conducted and sildenafil was administered to one of the patients. It was found that sildenafil did improve the flow of blood and showed a favorable fetal outcome during delivery.

Fetal growth restriction, shortly termed as FGR is a major cause for both perinatal mortality and morbidity. This is a wide ranging problem in pregnancy wherein a number of mechanisms lead to the growth of the fetal. Only a certain number of pregnancies with fetal growth restriction showed for altered peripheral vascular resistance. Certain pregnancies with fetal growth restriction showed higher levels of peripheral maternal vascular resistance in uterine arteries. As a result of this there is poor perinatal outcome. Such pregnancies will have a better outcome if the resistance value is normalized in later trimesters. Sildenafil citrate can increase the uterine blood flow and can also potentiate estrogen induced vasodilation.

Research on Viagra for FGR

In pregnancies with FGR and without preeclampsia, a reversible myo-metrial arterial tone by phosphodiesterase inhibition is known to be reported in vitro. The active ingredient in Viagra, sildenafil citrate prompts vasodilation by holding back type 5 phosphodiesterase (PDE5) which is responsible for the degradation of cGMP to guano-sine monophosphate. Thus hampering PDE5 extends the breakdown of cGMP and increases vasodilation. One report also suggested that sildenafil citrate also promotes vasodilation in myo-metrial biopsies that’s collected from IUGR pregnancies when there is a Cesarean section.

Sildenafil with FGR was used in the study in order to try inducing vasodilation and better uteroplacental perfusion which results in improved Doppler indices. Right now, there is no proper or appropriate treatment available for severe early-onset of fetal growth restriction. Sildenafil citrate vasodilates the myometrial arteries from women who have IUGR complicated pregnancies. Sildenafil citrate was known to be associated with increased fetal AC development.

Outcome

In order to achieve potential fetal growth, sufficient flow of blood for uteroplacental vascular function is absolutely necessary. Sildenafil, being a vasodilator is also known to have emerged as a potential management option in treating fetal growth restriction and also preeclampsia which later being normalized in velocimetric profile. However, if Viagra has to be administered for treating fetal growth restriction, it has to be taken only on advice of the doctor and in the right proportion.
