Flomax is the trade name of Tamsulosin and is an adrenergic receptor antagonist. Tamsulosin, developed by a reputed pharmaceutical company, was launched in 1996 and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The drug has a biological half-life of about 9 to 13 hours. This medication belongs to a class of drugs called as alpha blockers.


Flomax is used in treating symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia-BPH (enlarged prostate). It works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder as well as in the prostate and helps a patient to relieve symptoms of enlarged prostate.

Difficulty in urinating, decreased strength of the urine flow and pain during urination are a few among them. Flomax drug should not be used by women and children below 18 years of age.


Flomax is taken by mouth, usually 30 minutes after a meal. It is generally taken only once per day. The drug should not be crushed, chewed or broken and should be swallowed as a whole.
