Product Description

Celexa is a medication that is used in the treatment of depression. Its generic form is known as Citalopram. Alongside depression, it also treats eating disorders, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and premenstrual dysphoric syndrome.

Celexa falls within a broad class of antidepressants called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. These anti-depressants work on neurotransmitters – the naturally occurring chemicals that facilitate communication in the brain between nerves cells.

Drug data

Citalopram hydrobromide which is the active ingredient in Celexa belongs to a group of antidepressant medications known as SSRIs which is the abbreviated form for Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which are the most commonly prescribed anti-depressant drugs.

Celexa works by blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin by making it more available for use by the brain. Increased levels of serotonin are associated with enhanced moods which is very much important in relieving the symptoms of mood disorders. This drug is essentially prescribed for treating the subtypes of depression and major depressive disorder.

The drug can also be used in treating other conditions like obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, dysthymia, anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder and also premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

This drug comprises of inactive ingredients like glycerin, corn, starch, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium, hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, copovidone, lactose monohydrate, titanium dioxide, polyethylene glycol and iron oxide coloring agents, in addition to the active ingredient citalopram.

Dosage

Celexa medicine is available in the dosage strengths of 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg as tablets. The dosage for every individual varies and depends upon their age, medical condition and response to the treatment.

This medicine is usually administered as a single dose either in the morning or in the afternoon. The maximum dose an individual can take on a daily basis is 40 mg. Celexa can be taken irrespective of having had food or not as food does not affect the way the drug is absorbed by the body.

Taking Celexa medicine after having a meal will help a person to avoid nausea. The med should be taken exactly as advised by the doctor and should not be increased or decreased as doing so can result in unnecessary complications.

You should also not use Celexa medicine longer than what is recommended by the physician. You have to stop using the medicine slowly and should not stop using it abruptly as doing so can cause withdrawal reactions.

Precautions

Children, teens and individuals younger than 24 years of age are likely to get affected with suicidal thoughts and behavior. One should understand that antidepressants do not cause thoughts of suicide but the underlying psychiatric condition do. Therefore patients taking Celexa have to be monitored for their behavior, thoughts and actions.

Any person who is allergic to Celexa medicine or to its ingredients should not use it. This med is not advised for women who are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or even breastfeeding ladies.

If you have a family history of liver complications, severe heart disease, blood clot problems, long QT syndrome, bleeding disorders, glaucoma, kidney disease, low levels of potassium or magnesium in blood and bipolar disorder, you need to inform your consulting doctor before getting prescribed for Celexa. Patients who are having a history of drug abuse should be using this medicine with utmost caution.
