Blopress is a hypertension treating medication categorized under the angiotensin II receptor antagonist group of drugs, which is otherwise known by the name Candesartan in its generic formulation.

Blopress is currently being marketed by two leading pharmaceutical companies in various brand names. The active medical component of the pill is candesartan cilexetil, and the major inactive ingredient is lactose monohydrate.

Medical Uses

Blopress is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure in adults. It can be administered in children and adolescents in the age bracket of 6 to 18. Since it is an ACE inhibitor, it can be used as a first-line therapy for treating heart failure.

Blopress can also be co-administered with other ACE inhibitor. The bioavailability of the medicine is increased when it is taken along with other drug of the same class.

Dosage and Administration

The available dosage strengths of Blopress are 2mg, 4mg, 8mg, 16mg and 32mg tablets.

Blopress should be taken only once in a day, and should be administered orally. It can be administered either with or without food. The absorption potential of the medicine is no way altered when taken along with food. Abstain from crushing the pill into powdered form.

The commonly prescribed initial dose of Blopress is 8 mg, and the response should be ascertained after 4 weeks. Patients who haven’t experienced progress with the low dosage strength can increased the dose to 16mg, which should be taken once in a day.

Precautionary Advice

 If you use Blopress along with ACE inhibitors, Aliskiren and other similar drugs, then the medications can interact to increase the risk of developing hypotension, hyperkalemia, and either decreased renal functions or renal failure.

Taking any drugs, be it over the counter, herbal supplements or vitamins, it should be done only with the doctor’s consent.

Blopress is not recommended for use in women who are in their second or third trimester of pregnancy. The drug is also not advised for use in people who have liver or kidney problems, heart disease and diabetes.

Side Effects

Blopress has potential to cause side effects ranging from mild to severe. The prominent side effects are tenderness, muscle pain, fever, and tiredness. Some of the serious side effects are the impact endured in the skeletal muscle tissue that has the potential to adversely affect the kidney. The medication might elevate the potassium content in the body causing weakness, movement impairment, nausea and volatility in heart rate.

Prescription pills, herbal products, vitamins and over-the-counter drugs interact strongly with the medication.
