Bactrim is one of the oldest antibiotic medications which are a mixture of two other antibiotic drugs namely Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole. It is classified as a broad spectrum antibiotic and it is mostly prescribed for treating a host of bacterial infections. However, the medication also has got some powerful secondary medical uses like that of treating infections caused by highly sensitive organisms. The double strength tablet of Bactrim is supposed to be a generic variant that composes of 800mg of sulfamethoxazole and 160 mg of trimethoprim. The medication upon consumption can offer relief from difficult breathing conditions that usually experienced by people with chronic bronchitis.
The medication is found to be very effective for treating middle ear infections, intestinal infections and respiratory tract infections. Dosage and administration
The typical Bactrim dosage that is available is the compressed tablet with the strength 400 mg/80 mg, being Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole, respectively. The drug may also be taken as an oral suspension liquid, which should be administered by using the proper dose-measuring spoon or cup in the amount prescribed by the doctor.
This medication is available as oral tablet, intravenous solution, oral suspension and Bactrim double strength tablet. It is the nature of bacterial infection that determines the dosage strength for consumption. For treating urinary tract infections, the dosage would be a single double strength tablet or two ordinary tablets. It is to be given once in every 12 hours and should be continued for ten to fourteen days. For treating shigellosis, one double strength pill should be given for five consecutive days. Children can also be given the drug but at low dosage depending on the age and body weight. They should be given as per doctor’s advice and prescription.
