Avelox is a medication that was approved by FDA in the year 1999 for the treatment of bacterial infections that occur in the eyes. Moxifloxacin or its brand Avelox is manufactured by Alcon and developed by Bayer AG.
Belonging to a group of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, avelox works by preventing the production of proteins which is essential for the survival of bacteria. It inhibits an enzyme called DNA-gyrase to terminate the bacteria from developing.
Avelox is licensed in the US for the treatment of bacterial sinusitis, acquired pneumonia, complicated skin and intra-abdominal infections.
Avelox is mainly used in the treatment of conjunctivitis, which is the inflammation of the thin membrane that covers the white part and inner surface of the eyelids. Though it is a common problem it should be treated immediately as it is highly contagious. The infection mostly starts with one eye and then spreads onto the other.
Avelox is also prescribed to help in the treatment of sinus and pneumonia.
