Avapro, which is the generic formulation of Irbesartan, is a hypertension drug that is classified as an angiotensin-2 receptor agonist. The drug works by preventing the blood vessels from narrowing, thereby improving the blood pressure and blood flow. Irbesartan has an active half-life of about eleven to fifteen hours. The available dosage strengths of this medication are 75 mg, 150 mg, and 300 mg.

Medical Uses

Avapro is primarily prescribed for overcoming hypertension as the drug’s potency in preventing the constriction of blood vessels aid in reducing elevated blood pressure levels. The medications are also used to delay the progression of diabetic nephropathy, microalbuminuria, proteinuria, and kidney disease in patients with diabetes type 2. The average dose per day and duration of course depends on the age, severity of the problem, and level of disease progression.

Dosing guide

Avapro tablets should be taken exactly as recommended by the prescribing physician and following the instructions on the prescription label. The drug may be taken with or without food. The patient should stick to the treatment regimen without modifying the dose on one’s own. The patient should undergo regular health checks for blood pressure, along with blood tests. Even if the hypertension patient feels an improvement in health, the drug should not be stopped without the doctor’s consent as high blood pressure does not usually have visible symptoms.

Do not take the medication along with alcohol as it can further lower the blood pressure.

Side Effects

Avapro can cause a few mild side effects like tiredness, heartburn, and stomach troubles. More severe symptoms that require immediate medical attention include muscle pain, dark colored urine, sudden weakness, fever, vomiting, rapid weight gain, and swelling of the hands or feet. Relative Contraindications to Avapro

If the patient has diabetes, then the hypertension medication should not be used with drugs containing Aliskiren. Another drug to avoid is lithium. To prevent any kind of harmful interactions, one should disclose to the healthcare provider on any medications being taken, including other prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins.
