Product Description

Artane is an antispasmodic drug and is available as the brand formulation of Trihexyphenidyl. It has a biological half-life of 3 to 4 hours. The onset of action happens within 1 hour after the drug is taken. It reaches its peak in 2 to 3 hours and has a lasting period of about 6 to 12 hours. This medication belongs to a class of drugs called as Anticholinergic.

Uses

Artane is used to treat stiffness, Tremors, Spasms, and poor muscle control of Parkinson’s disease. It is also taken to treat involuntary movements due to the side effects of certain psychiatric medications. This drug works by blocking acetylcholine which is a natural substance in the body. It helps in stopping muscle spasms in neck, back as well as in eyes.

Dosage

This medication is taken by mouth after a meal and is usually taken 3 to 4 times in a day. For some patients it would be prescribed to be taken before going to sleep. Drink lots of water while taking the medication. The doctor would choose the best dose for the patients.

Usually, low dose can be taken at an initial stage and can be increased after few weeks. It is to be remembered that the dosage strength is based on tolerance, age as well as severity of the problem. Hence it is not wise to share medications with other patients.

This medication is also available in a liquid form. The syrup can be taken by using a dose measuring spoon. Do not take the drug longer than the course duration as it could be habit forming. Increase of dosage, stopping the medication should be done according to the doctor’s instruction.
